Responding is what we do when value following and innovation. We respond with our collaboration and contribution.

This is in contrast to structuring (see opposite edge), when we are motivated to lead and implement. If we overvalue leading and implementation or undervalue following and innovation, we become non-responsive. Conversely we can become over responsive, neglecting our potential to lead and implement and compulsively following and innovating.

Effective leadership requires a sensitivity to the situational needs for both structuring and responding. When we want to collaborate and contribute, however, responding is the primary leadership behavior.

"I believe that we respond most and best to work in any art form (and to other experience as well) if we are pluralistic, flexible, relative in our judgments, if we are eclectic."

- Pauline Kael

"Oh, the miraculous energy that flows between two people who care enough to get beyond surfaces and games, who are willing to take the risks of being totally open, of listening, of responding with the whole heart. How much we can do for each other."

- Alex Noble

"Words can never adequately convey the incredible impact of our attitudes toward life. The longer I live the more convinced I become that life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent how we respond to it."

- Charles Swindoll
