Interpretation

 

Following is not loosing, it is letting another lead when appropriate. Leading is not winning, only the team can win. Respecting intentions to lead and to follow is the essence of team work.

 

Without respect a person only leads those who unconditionally accept his/her authority. While often favored for implementation teams in stable conditions, without an outlet for feedback in times of change, there can be no collaboration. Timely adaptation requires a degree of self-organization, possible only if those leading have the respect of those following and vice versa.

 

It is the respecting of self-organizing roles allowing people to lead or follow according to their capabilities and the needs of the situation that permits collaboration.
