"The village had institutionalized all human functions in forms of low intensity.... Participation was high and organization was low. This is the formula for stability."
- Marshall McLuhan
"The real accomplishment of modern science and technology consists in taking ordinary men, informing them narrowly and deeply and then, through appropriate organization, arranging to have their knowledge combined with that of other specialized but equally ordinary men. This dispenses with the need for genius. The resulting performance, though less inspiring, is far more predictable."
- John Kenneth Galbraith
Organization is the outcome of respecting how important it is to lead and to follow, structuring for implementation as a leader and conforming for implementation as a follower.
Organization complements our intention to innovate (see opposite corner). This is weakened if we loose our focus on our priorities to lead, follow and implement; there may be no product of our innovation! Equally we can over organize to the detriment of innovation.
Leadership includes striking a balance between supporting innovation with the practices of responding, improvising and realizing, and building organization by structuring, conforming and respecting.
