If we desire to lead we need some visualization of what we want to happen, an organization of resources to accomplish it and the collaboration of those involved. Helpful practices are respecting, structuring and improvising.

Additionally we need to make a contribution to accomplishing the vision. (see opposite face). We make a contribution when we realize something through innovation or implementation, responding as we innovate and conforming as we implement, effectively following our own lead.

In this we way we gain feedback, learn and make changes in our visualization, organization and collaboration and, possibly most important, we are seen to be a credible model that others can follow. It is by leading ourselves, first of all, that we develop leadership.

"The real leader has no need to lead - he is content to point the way."

- Henry Miller

"I have never yet seen any plan which has not been mended by the observations of those who were much inferior in understanding to the person who took the lead in the business."

- Edmund Burke

"One’s real life is so often the life that one does not lead."

- Oscar Wilde

"The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and the will to carry on.... The genius of a good leader is to leave behind him a situation which common sense, without the grace of genius, can deal with successfully."

- Walter Lippmann
