Improvising is what we do when we value leading and innovating. The outcomes of improvising are our visualizations and collaborations.
Improvising contrasts with conforming (see opposite edge) when we value following and implementation. When we insufficiently improvise we limit our visualization and collaboration and increasingly conform. Conversely, by over improvising we neglect conforming, weaken our organization and diminish our contribution.
Conforming and improvising are synergistic leadership practices, optimally each being available as appropriate. Versatility in leadership is about knowing when to conform and when to improvise.
"These are days when no one should rely unduly on his competence. Strength lies in improvisation. All the decisive blows are struck left-handed."
- Walter Benjamin
"The only way to recognize a military genius is by the fact that, during the war, he will mock the rules of warfare and will employ creative improvisation instead of tested methods and he will do so at the right moment."
- Stefan Zweig
"Improvisation is too good to leave to chance."
- Paul Simon
