We make a contribution when we follow, responding in our need to innovate, conforming in our need to implement and by realizing something through both.
However, we lose our opportunity for leadership if we are stuck just making a contribution. When we want to lead (see opposite corner) our contribution must be made in the context of our visualization of what we want, our organization of resources to accomplish it and our collaboration with those involved. Conversely, if we fail to make a contribution, visualization, organization and collaboration are for nothing.
It is through our contribution to some larger effort - by responding, conforming and realizing - that our leadership becomes relevant.
"I must admit I personally measure success in terms of the contributions an individual makes to her or his fellow human beings."
- Margaret Mead
"If your contribution has been vital there will always be somebody to pick up where you left off, and that will be your claim to immortality."
- Walter Gropius
"If you do not express your own original ideas, if you do not listen to your own being, you will have betrayed yourself. Also, you will have betrayed your community in failing to make your contribution."
- Rollo May
