Conforming is what we do when we intend to follow and implement. Our conforming makes possible organization and contribution.
Conforming contrasts with improvising (see opposite edge) which is what we do when we intend to lead and innovate. If we loose our focus on conforming we limit our capacities for organization and contribution and excessively improvise. Conversely, relative over-emphasis on conforming increases our capacities for organization and contribution at the expense of improvising for visualization and collaboration.
Effective leadership requires a developed sensitivity to the situational need for conforming and improvising. When organization and contribution are are important outcomes, conforming is an essential leadership behavior. Quotes
". . the self respect of individuals ought to make them demand of their leaders conformity with an agreed-upon code of ethics and moral conduct." - Mary Barnett Gilson
"I do not wish to quarrel with any man or nation. I seek rather, I may say, even an excuse for conforming to the laws of the land. I am but too ready to conform to them. - Henry David Thoreau
"That man is a creature who needs order yet yearns for change is the creative contradiction at the heart of the laws which structure his conformity and define his deviancy." - Freda Adler | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
