Collaboration emerges when, in our desire to innovate, we respect and balance the alternatives we have to lead by improvising and to follow by responding.
Collaboration is complemented by the need to implement (see opposite corner) which we do by visualizing an outcome, organizing for it and contributing to it. When we stop collaborating, efforts become focused on the routine structuring, conforming and realizing of implementation. While implementation is essential, it is unsustainable without the complementary collaborative component allowing for change and growth.
We express our leadership in this collaborative capacity to selectively lead or follow as we innovate with others.
"Our duty, as men and women, is to proceed as if limits to our ability did not exist. We are collaborators in creation."
- Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
"Our new challenge as leaders is to bring real collaboration to an increasingly virtual world."
- Chris Newham
"Science is a collaborative effort."
- John Bardeen
"A leader is someone who steps back from the entire system and tries to build a more collaborative, more innovative system that will work over the long term."
- Robert Reich
